Happy Workers Day, Chickens! In light of this holiday we would first like to give a special shout-out to all of the incredible individuals who work for Tiago’s SA! Without you, non of this would be possible! Now, on to business…

Winter is Here!

The month of May is bringing with it some much appreciated cooler weather and those of us down on the South Coast are breathing a sigh of relief! With it comes its drawbacks though, and I am not talking about White Walkers.

Cold weather makes us lazy, our bodies slow down to conserve energy and heat making it much harder for us to motivate ourselves to get up and keep active, when all we really want to do is stay in bed!

Winter also makes us want to eat more… The good news is that there is a valid reason for that! Our bodies’ burn more calories in winter trying to keep us warm which means that we can eat a bit more without it settling around our waist lines. The trick is to not over indulge, make healthy choices like our yummy flame grilled chicken, and stay active!

We’ve highlighted some fun outdoor winter activities that will keep you active, warm you up, and chase away those winter blues!

Go for a Run or Ride a Bike!

Winter is the best time to explore some of the amazing hiking and biking trails KwaZulu Natal has to offer. The crisp air is invigorating and you don’t get fatigued as quickly as you do in the sweltering summer heat.

Hiking and biking are both excellent low impact cardiovascular exercises that get the blood pumping making you fitter and stronger, improving your cardiovascular health and physical stamina. For something a little more high impact, winter is a great time for trail runs!

KwaZulu Natal is a lush green paradise with some incredible trails on offer! Here are a few of our favourites!

Beaver Creek Coffee Estate

Beaver Creek can be found on Izingolweni Road in Port Edward. The Estate offers gorgeous trails for hiking, trail running and mountain biking through the Port Edward Farmlands and rolling hills. Fuel up before or after your ride/walk/run with some delicious coffee that has been farmed, roasted and brewed on site. Perfect for a winter treat.

Clearwater Trails

Clearwater Trails offers some truly breathtaking views whether from the saddle of a mountain bike, or simply during a leisurely stroll. They offer trails from beginners all the way up to hardcore hikers that lead you along the Umtamvuna River where you can sneak a peek at waterfalls sprinkling down into the gorge. If you don’t mind a good hill hike you can even head right on down to the river but it might be too chilly to take a dip.

If you are in the Durban / Hillcrest area and are looking for an outdoor adventure, Giba Gorge is for you. This beautiful eco park is kid and pet friendly and offers everything from trail walks, hikes, organized trail runs, a mountain bike park, horse rides and more! If getting out and about this winter is on your list of things to do, Giba won’t disappoint.
